As a GP training programme, we train the GPs of tomorrow. Our GPs are flexible, resilient and independent. At the end of their training, these GP trainees can provide independent primary care in a dynamic society.
Training the GPs of tomorrow requires a broad development and a broad vision of education. We base our vision on creating the best circumstances for competency-focused learning. Our mission is to train competent, resilient and future-oriented GPs. Please refer to the NEP for more information about this broad vision of education.
The National Education Programme provides a common framework for the 7 GP training centres to build their local programmes and curricula. All Dutch General Practitioners (GPs) are trained and licensed in one of these centres. Starting 1 March 2024, an updated NEP has been effectuated. This programme has been cocreated with many stakeholders, including GP trainees, supervisors, teachers, patients and educational experts.
In the NEP, we focus on essential societal and professional changes, such as diversity, sustainability and digitalisation. We also explicitly pay attention to the GP as a unique professional. We try to offer more room for personal and professional development within our programme. This room can only be created if we try to focus on what is really important for the GP of the future, and for the future of our profession. That is why we have adopted the slogan ‘Responsible Trust’.
In the NEP, we describe the essential educational conditions under which we can responsibly loosen control at the benefit of motivated, skilled, responsible and adaptive professionals.

We have created a dialogue poster to facilitate the implementation of the new NEP. This implementation tool can be used by the training centres to start a dialogue between educators, teachers, staff, and other stakeholders about how we can fit the new National Education Plan in the programme.
