GP training programme

The general practitioner training programme in the Netherlands lasts three years and is primarily practice-based. As a GP in training, you spend your first and third year of the programme in a so-called training practice, a general practice where you will see and treat patients under the supervision of a GP trainer. In your second year, you will complete an internship in emergency care, a nursing home and a mental health institution.

Dual character

The general practice training programme has a dual character:

  • One day a week, trainees will receive theoretical education and in-house training at the GP training centre, in a permanent group, where the GP trainees share their experiences with the group. The teachers are general practitioners and behavioural scientists who are also active in their own practice.
  • During the rest of the week, the GP trainees work in a general practice under the supervision and coaching of an experienced general practitioner trainer. These role models teach you how to use your knowledge, skills and insights as effectively as possible in your work as a general practitioner.
